Your input would be appreciated - we’re going to flashback to your teen years!

Filed under: Uncategorized — sundary @ 2:22 pm

Alright folks, here’s the deal. As some of you former JSers may remember I was in foster care and I now work for an agency that does private fostercare nationwide.

I plan on doing an activity at our next staff meeting to help the staff understand, and just to start a discussion.

There is an activity that I’ve done before in workshops that allows you to be in the mindset of children in care, since we only really deal with 12+ years youth we will be working in those teenage years.

Now here’s the part where all ya’ll come in.

I need you to list 3 of your favorite things while you were that age, things you simply could not live without and I also want you to list your top 2 memories.

The things can be people, activities, tangibile possensions anything. Your memories can be anything from holidays, to ditching school, hanging out with friends, simply ANYTHING.

After I have a workable list compiled (thanks to you guys) I will tell you the rest of the activity and gain some feedback. :)

Thank you guys!!!

ps. (Anything between 12 and 18, you can decide what memory is most vivid!)

  11. Things: records (yes, the real vinyl ones), books, my horse

Memories: playing in the hay barn (riding bales of hay down the ramp into the mule/horse feeding troughs and making forts out of the hay bales); riding my horse along with my cousins on their horses–thru the woods and pastures, making sure to avoid the bulls; playing in my grandmother’s chicken coop (up on tall legs with a ramp into it)

In the 70’s when we were young teens, living in the country–we were’nt as “mature” as kids are at the same age today. We have kids coming in that started having sex at age 9–I hardly knew what that was when I was 15. We also grew up outside–we had one tv and it was in the family room, got 4 or 5 channels and was controlled by my parents and only used on Saturday and Sunday nights(they’d tell us to go over and change channels–we were the remote controls), we only stayed in the house if the weather was so bad my grandmother wouldn’t let us out (we’d sneak by her if we could so we could go outside to watch thunderstorms). Another memory–we’d open the window upstairs that was right over the front porch, climb and slide down the tin roof and land out in the front yard (scared my grandmother half to death).
